Audiolab DC Block - Silver - Hifi Power Conditioner

About the Audiolab DC Block - Silver - Hi-Fi Power Conditioner:

Direct Current Blocker

The DC block is designed to improve the quality of AC power that powers our audio and AV systems.

Mains power has a fundamental impact on the audio signal as it passes through a system, from source to amplifier to speakers. Mains power in a typical home is subject to interference caused by a series of problems, distorting the AC waveform before it reaches each component. This causes noise in the audio signal, which degrades sound quality - a situation that gets worse as the electrical devices we use in our homes increase.

DC Mains Supply

A common problem is "DC on the mains" - a problem known to affect the performance of audio equipment, especially amplifiers. In theory, the mains power we draw from the outlets in our homes should be pure alternating current, with a perfectly symmetrical sine wave alternating between positive and negative phases. The presence of "asymmetrical loads" - numerous household appliances that use the AC energy available in the mains cycle unevenly, from dimmers to kitchen appliances to computer power supplies - causes the waveform to be offset, resulting in the presence of DC voltage on the AC supply.

DC voltage

The AC transformers commonly used in home audio equipment cannot tolerate the presence of significant DC voltage levels without being compromised. Less than 500 mV DC current - typical of an average household electricity supply - can be enough to saturate toroidal transformers of the kind often found in amplifiers, adversely affecting sonic performance and causing audible mechanical vibrations.

By blocking or canceling DC voltage found in the AC supply, the Audiolab DC block corrects the DC offset and rebalances the mains sine wave (see image above). But addressing "DC on the mains" is not the only benefit of this dual-action device - it also includes a high-quality audio-class filter circuit that removes RFI/EMI contaminants from the mains supply. This is effective in reducing both differential-mode noise (exacerbated by cheap switching power supplies used by many household appliances) and common-mode noise (exacerbated by airborne interference from phones, Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth).

Overview of the Audiolab DC Block - Silver - Hifi Power Conditioner

This combination of technologies ensures that the DC Block does more than solve the problem of transformer saturation caused by mains DC; it also helps to unlock the sonic potential of any audio component to which it is connected. The noise floor drops and the sound gains focus, with less grain, improved clarity, better-defined bass and "airier" treble.

Easy Installation

Using the DC block is simple: connect the output to the IEC power connector of an audio/AV component, then connect the input to a power outlet (both cables are included). The unit is designed for use with a single audio or AV system component - Audiolab recommends that if one DC block is purchased, it should be used with the integrated amplifier or power amplifier component in the user's system to get the greatest benefit from the DC technology block. If desired, additional units can be purchased for use with other electronics in the system - preamplifiers, source components, and so on. With each additional DC block, further incremental improvements in overall system performance can be expected.
