Perhaps the most dramatic update in the entire HT range is provided by the remarkable REL Acoustics HT/1003 MKII subwoofer. In the theater, nothing impresses like raw output, even if you don't use it all. The increase in usable headroom of the HT/1003 MKII gives an ease of sound that smaller designs cannot match. Here we realize a full 10 dB higher output (that's twice as loud) over its predecessor. Like its bigger brothers, the HT/1003 MKII receives the full range of MKII upgrades. First, a higher secondary filter allows energy to expand further into the sonic spectrum, meaning explosions are more ferocious than ever. Next, an all-analog PerfectFilter™ lifts and extends the deepest bass. In addition, an analog subsonic filter filters out signals that could lead to damage below 20 Hz. All this is wrapped in the same sexy, serious look that perfectly matches our Series T/x and S for use in HT-3D systems. Improvements to driver, amplifier and filters also ensure that this latest version is now a seriously musical sub.

Designer Clothing

The sexy new cabinets are custom-made, with new textures, proportions and finishes previously unseen in the category. Lower, tighter cabinets lend proportions borrowed from our new Reference models. Through years of experimentation, we've found that this results in faster, deeper bass reproduction while looking great. The eye is immediately drawn to the top panel, which is finished in 5 layers of hand-polished piano black lacquer. A discreet REL logo floats in the top layer of lacquer, while the body of the cabinet is clad in horizontal striped composite with line beads. The entire affair looks expensive, tailored and tastefully understated. It can also be combined with Series T/x or Series S in large, fully immersive REL HT/3D™ setups.*

The driver of the REL Acoustics HT/1003 MKII subwoofer remains a 10" (250 mm) CarbonGlass™ construction to keep the overall size reasonable in its role as a powerhouse for slightly more modest spaces. Every part is reinforced - improved in both big and small ways to deliver the best possible performance. Lightweight, stiff and quiet, the combination of primary cones of fiberglass with hub caps of real carbon fiber results in a cost-effective yet pistonic cone. Larger, more powerful magnets produce more energy. Improved suspension designs with enlarged rim to allow greater spring travel means output remains under control to the limits of amplifier and driver. The result is great output at this price while remaining fast and liquid, like all RELs.

Amplifiers do the dirty work and the heavy lifting in a theater subwoofer. We turned to a true Tier One amplifier supplier to build our latest design for us; they did not disappoint. They created thicker boards and improved power supplies - all things that, while not sexy, result in a brutally powerful 300W amplifier (did you know that all RELs are specified as RMS Continuous, just like a big, expensive 300W monoblock amplifier?) with remarkable longevity. It generates truly awesome sound. While theater applications make all the headlines, the big secret is that it sounds sublime in musical applications. PerfectFilters™: where perfection begins

REL input filters are well-known throughout the audio world. They combine ultra-fast analog crossovers, customer-designed elevation filters that increase the flatness of deep bass, and integrated limiters that ensure all the power explodes outward. This compact array of analog circuits is REL's secret recipe in both music and movie sound. Refined in this second generation, the secondary filters used now allow expansion to a much higher frequency, making the dilution of air in the sound of an explosion feel much more realistic. In addition, our latest circuit includes a fully analog subsonic filter that starts at a low level of 12 Hz to minimize the effects of infrasound from soundtracks that extend well below the driver's resonance point. The result is incredibly delivered power with the ability to play to the driver's limit without distortion.

Wired for sound: HT-Air

Because of the wired sound signal, long cables across the floor used to be required. With our optional HT-Air™, great sound can be "decoupled" and the cable replaced with a small transmitter and matching receiver that sends an incredibly fast 5.8 Ghz wireless signal up to 60 feet without digital compression. This affordable circuit contains the same LSIC chip that powers our state-of-the-art AirShip II, without the expensive discrete analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog (DAC) converters. It is perfect for the .1/LFE signals using RCA connectors that are the primary mission of the REL Acoustics HT/1003 MKII subwoofer.
