Cordless Direct Driven Motor

The motor at the heart of the Technics SL-1000R - Record Player Directly Driven is based on the wireless direct drive motor developed for the SL-1200G which was released in 2016, and further improved. The dual rotor type wireless direct-driven motor with dual coils developed specifically for this purpose had coils on both sides for a 12-pole drive with 18 coils, with sufficient torque to drive the heavy turntable (approx. 7.9 kg). Moving the coils 60 degrees on both sides improved substrate stiffness, suppressed small vibrations and reduced self-induction. These improvements provided stable rotation with 0.015% wow and flutter or less, which is considered a measurement limit. In addition, the thrust bearings supporting the heavy-duty rotor use a specially designed plastic to provide both high rigidity and high reliability.

Suppression of Unwanted Motor Vibration

The engine developed for the SL-1200G served as the platform for the direct-drive motor. Reinforced double-coil thrust bearings and a chassis with increased rigidity provided a stabilized engine with a low center of gravity. Placing two stainless steel weights of high rigidity and specific gravity on the bottom of the chassis maintained rigidity and a low center of gravity. These thorough measures to prevent unwanted vibrations help achieve overwhelming turning accuracy and improve the signal-to-noise ratio.

Heavy Turntable

The turntable places tungsten weights, which have an extremely high specific gravity and are difficult to handle, on the outer edge of a 10 mm thick brass weight. The brass weight is laminated into the aluminum casting, giving the turntable a total weight of about 7.9 kg and an inertia mass of about 1 ton/cm. A rubber damping for eliminating unwanted vibrations is also attached to the rear surface to provide a 3-layer construction and for high rigidity and excellent vibration damping characteristics.

Separate Control Unit

The control unit is separated from the main unit to suppress the effects of unwanted noise on the main unit. To obtain a power supply that provides good regulation for high torque, a switching power supply has been applied. To reduce the noise reaching the pickup element, the switching power supply features a unique technology that provides a voltage supply with minimal noise through a newly developed "unwanted noise suppression circuit." And to also suppress noise during communication, a highly reliable system that counteracts the effects of external noise is used for communication between the main unit and the control unit. These thorough noise suppression measures provide the world's highest signal-to-noise ratio.

Minor Adjustments and Indication of Rotations

This turntable supports not only analog LP (331 1/3 rpm) and EO (45 rpm) records, but also SP (78 rpm) The speed (rpm) can also be adjusted to two decimal positions (up to ±16%) from the control unit. The OLED screen can display the rpm with accuracy to two decimal places, allowing the user to both see and hear the extremely accurate rotation.

Highly Sensitive Tone Arm of the Technics SL-1000R - Record Player Directly Driven

To make the tone arm follow the rotation of the record as accurately as possible, Technics has traditionally used the S-tyoe universal tone arm with static balance with a lightweight, highly damping magnesium tone arm pipe. High-precision bearings are used in the tone arm's cardanic suspension construction. Highly experienced Japanese craftsmen handle the entire assembly and adjustment to achieve high sensitivity to the initial movement to most accurately follow the groove cut into the records. OFC is used for internal wiring, so that the music signal coming from the cartridge is not attenuated and the musical energy cut into the record is not lost, producing very lively sounds.

Tone arm base

The tone arm base, on which the tone arm is mounted, is highly integrated into the turntable part. By matching the tone arm base part to the tone arm mounting structure, the relationship between the tone arm bearings, the turntable bearings and the position of the stylus is always constant, producing a structure in which vibrations due to the rigidity of the turntable base materials have a minimal effect, and the performance of the tone arm is maximized. An optional tone arm base is also available, which in addition to the standard tone arm supports the mounting of an existing short or long tone arm from SME or Ortofon (up to three including the standard tone arm).
