About the Mission 770 - White and Black - Speakers AND Stands

The Mission 770 represents one of the most iconic models in the long history of Mission speakers. A model that embodied Mission's pioneering research in the late 1970s and 1980s, with a bloodline dating back to 1977. The original Mission 770 debuted in 1978. It quickly became Mission's best-selling loudspeaker and was naturally drawn to MK2 and MK3 modifications with improvements on sensitivity and power handling. Then the design eventually migrated to Freedom and other variations, but none of them had the sales impact or prominence that the original 770 gained.

The project's design and engineering team was led by Peter Comeau, Mission's current director of Acoustic Design. Peter was a young reviewer for Hi-Fi Answers when the original 770 was launched and remembers well its impact (he subsequently co-founded speaker maker Heybrook in 1979). For Peter, the new Mission 770 is a labor of love; just as it was for Farad Azima all those years ago.

The new 770 announces the return of UK production for the Mission brand, where a 25,000 square foot production facility has been specially built in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire - the home of British hi-fi.

The Mission 770 has always been crafted according to the Mission principles of quality and value for money. New Mission 770 is a further example of these two edicts; balancing fine craftsmanship, natural sound quality and affordability in a beautifully proportioned loudspeaker that has been purchased by the millions in its various incarnations around the world.

The original 770 was known for its warm, rich and natural sounding character and the new Mission 770 retains that status, but infuses it with an open, detailed performance that will entice you to rediscover your entire music collection.

Focus on Mission 770 Design - White and Black

Indeed, the emphasis in the design of the new Mission 770 is on that combination of polypropylene cone and resonance-driven cabinet. Accordingly, Mission has developed a new polypropylene driver that mimics the extended response and low coloration of the original, while the motor system has been upgraded to account for modern power handling and dynamic requirements. Of course, like the original, the driver is built on an 8-inch cast chassis with larger rear windows to reduce early reflections back through the cone. Special care was taken to couple a low-density nitrile surround to the cone to match its impedance and reduce reflections from the cone surround.

Drivers of the Mission 770 - White and Black

A new 20-cm polypropylene mid/bass driver has been developed for the redesigned 770, mimicking the extended response and low coloration of the original, while the motor system has been upgraded to account for modern power handling and dynamic requirements.

Like the original, the driver is built on a cast chassis with large rear windows to reduce early reflections through the cone. Special care has been taken to couple a low-density nitrile surround to the cone to match its impedance and reduce reflections from the cone surround.
The new polypropylene cone is loaded with minerals to make it stiffer than the original, yielding fast, tight bass that allows the listener to hear exactly how bass instruments are played. This is compensated for by tuning the cabinet and reflex port to a very low frequency, avoiding the "one note bass" typical of many bass reflex systems. In addition, the port extends sharply at both the inlet and outlet to facilitate airflow and eliminate distortion. Bass is powerful and clean to below 30 Hz in the room, which is remarkable for speakers of this size.

The soft dome treble of woven textile - true to form, with a high flux ferrite magnet, is designed for smooth, detailed HF extension. This new treble unit uses a lightweight, damped microfiber dome with ultra-smooth response, supported by a damped back chamber that pushes fundamental resonance well below the crossover area. The quality of this 28 mm dome blends perfectly with the mid/bass driver to ensure an even character throughout the entire range of the entire speaker.

Endless Development of the Mission 770 - White and Black

The highly researched crossover - thousands of hours of listening tests perfect the coherent, seamless musical output that is both exciting and natural in the reproduction of any source material.
IAG's Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau, has worked tirelessly to ensure seamless integration between the drive units so that the speaker behaves as one music-making system.

With today's advanced software crossover mapping and measurement techniques, Mission can perfect the balance between bass and midrange and match the crossover to the treble unit by mapping acoustic crossover slopes with extreme accuracy. Yet choosing EQ and crossover for the new 770 required hundreds of hours of listening sessions with a wide variety of music, and more than 170 circuit iterations were tried before the final crossover was determined.
The circuit was then mapped to individual bass and treble PCBs using very short signal paths and high-performance components such as super-transparent polypropylene capacitors and air-core inductors, maintaining the simplicity and elegance of the original while improving critical elements. The resulting transparency for musical detail ensures that the thrilling emotion of music is fully conveyed, while maintaining a seamless transition between the mid/bass and treble units.

Mission 770 Housing - White and Black

The drivers and crossover are housed in a real wood veneered cabinet with a white laminated faceplate that reflects the style that made the Mission 770 a standout hi-fi product in the 1970s and 1980s. Beneath the rich, pink-tinted walnut or black veneer lies further technological advances. While the original 770 reduced discoloration in the midrange using the BBC-influenced technique of a thin-walled cabinet damped by bituminous cushioning mass loading, the new 770 has a double-walled sandwich of high-density MDF and particleboard, bound by a layer of an All-new treble unit with 28 mm microfiber dome delivers smooth and extended high-frequency high-damping glue. This results in a cabinet with panel resonance well below audibility, allowing the drive units to do their job without being tainted by cabinet coloration at all frequencies.
Internal bracing adds strength to the front panel and supports the drive unit to the cabinet, creating a mechanical support that supports the dynamic performance of the base unit and reveals the micro-dynamics of musical performance. This is complemented by a layer of acoustic foam and damping fiber, strategically placed to absorb cabinet reflections without exaggerating bass quality.

The new Mission 770 is not only designed and developed in the UK; it is also made here. Mission's parent company, IAG, has expanded its facilities in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire - Mission's traditional home base - to include key manufacturing, assembly and finishing processes for specially selected products, in addition to the R&D function already located here. A 9,000 ft2 production facility has been added to the existing building in Huntingdon, including a new anechoic chamber, giving a total of 25,000 ft2 of office, laboratory and production space.

A Stand Up Design

The Mission 770 stand was custom designed in collaboration with Mission's Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau. Every aspect has been thought of to create the perfect presentation of the 770 speaker. Handmade in England, with robust British steel, the 770 stand reinforces the uncompromising approach in the "Made in UK" theme for the return of the Mission 770.
